This article was written by Sara Donaldson, a freelance copyeditor, after enrolling on Neil Kerber’s 5 Week Cartoon Course…

In July 2017 I realised that I wasn’t switching off. Being a freelance copyeditor/copywriter means you’re juggling a lot – all the time. I happened to see that Neil had launched a 5-week cartoon course. After some humming and harring, I decided one night (after a glass of wine or two) to just go for it. Here was something fun that might help me relax and perhaps give me a new skill set. Something that might also set me apart from the crowd.

I loved to doodle once, but I’d lost my confidence.

Neil’s cartoon course was not only a brilliant way to relax, in 5 weeks I was so engrossed that I found myself actually taking breaks just so that I could practice drawing cartoons. I became more creative, I found my sense of humour again and it allowed me to look at the world in a slightly different way. I started using cartoons in my business by drawing doodles for my blog, and gave a talk at a conference about how the course had helped me, using them as illustrations. I’ve even had colleagues compliment me on my creations and calling me a cartoonist – that made me smile.

Neil’s course has transformed me from a stressed out freelancer to one who can reach for a notepad and use cartoons as a way to escape.

It’s given me a new skill, helped my creativity and stopped me being so damned serious.
